Leonora and Penderton have an argument that same night, in which Leonora taunts Penderton and strips naked in front of him. Set on an army base in Georgia, the book was inspired by a story about a young soldier who was arrested for being a Peeping Tom in the Fort Bragg married officers’ quarters. While generally the later is accepted as his masterpiece "Reflections in a Golden Eye" is misunderstood as Huston's "misfire", as a "flop", an opinion with which I tend to disagree.

The film originally was released in a version in which all scenes were suffused with the color gold, with one object in each scene (such as a rose) normally colored. Overall it's an intelligent film whose main theme is repression and ultimate frustration of desire with it's tragic consequences. Penderton goes to the room and shoots Williams dead. Two rival motorcycle gangs terrorize a small town after one of their leaders is thrown in jail. As that version puzzled audiences, it was withdrawn and a normally colored version released.
The Code that had dominated what could and could not be shown on the screen was just being lifted. One day while riding, Langdon, Leonora and Penderton see Williams riding nude and bareback on one of the military horses. Weldon is generally a solitary man who in his time alone tries to bolster his self image as he feels less than adequate as a man and a Major. As he continues this practice, Williams starts to go through Leonora's belongings, especially her lingerie and perfume.
