If so, then the flick isn't a 10.

He considers shooting Hidalgo to alleviate his suffering, but is unable to bring himself to do it. I also enjoyed Spartacus the TV show, that has one of Hidalgo's actors in it.

I also love an animal storyline and this was one. I found all of the actors wonderful, the scenery so different from just a western and the horsemanship outstanding.

Another actor who rides is Robert Duvall, he is wonderful to watch in Lonesome Dove as is Tommy Lee Jones. Viggo is perfect in this role as the "cowboy" and rides Hidalgo like the wind. He is a half-breed, part Native American and part white. Reminds me of the times years ago when films were of the type you could take your kids to. Strange that they don't flesh out the other racers before the start though. I usually do not go for westerns, but this one looked rather good on the trailers so I gave it a try. Nevertheless, if you want to suspend your belief and can overlook the political implications of the movie, it can be a fun ride. The epilogue states that Hopkins went on to reportedly win 400 long-distance races and was an outspoken supporter for wild mustangs until his death in 1951, while Hidalgo's descendants live free in the wilderness in and around Oklahoma. Africans were enslaved and women wore (wear) veils. 10 out of 12 found this helpful. He also made October Sky, which I haven't seen, but has been recommended. I was surprised at just how good it was, as it has received so little attention. Many of the Ghost Dancers who reenact the sacred ceremony of 1890 in Because the Disney Corporation marketed the movie as a true story, some historians criticized the film both because of the legendary status of Hopkins' claims and for the film's divergence from his accounts. The film says that descendants of the horse Hidalgo, for which the movie was named, live among the Gilbert Jones herd of According to the Longriders Guild, the Saudi Arabian Government say officially that there has never been an "Ocean of Fire" race.
As an admirer of wild horses and a female who happens to love westerns it was great to have a movie with those qualities. Held yearly for centuries, the Ocean of Fire--a 3,000 mile survival race across the Arabian desert--was a challenge restricted to the finest Arabian horses ever bred, the purest and noblest lines, owned by the greatest royal families. 8 out of 8 found this helpful. Though I highly doubt all the things that happened in the movie happened in real life as claimed by the makers of the film, I think the guy this movie is based on was probably a good story teller. I was riveted throughout and it should be considered an epic. Based on Hopkins' account of his mixed-race ancestry, the movie production employed Lakota historians, medicine men, and tribal leaders as consultants to advise during every scene that represented their culture. ain't easy to find adventure-movies made in the old style: the good guy, the very bad guy, the girl, and a happy ending ... Well, this is what Hidalgo offers us. Was this review helpful? The film is just at war with itself. OK, I think this will post now. 4 out of 4 found this helpful. The story was great and the acting and everything. 9 out of 11 found this helpful. The only thing that keeps this movie from being a 10 is the fact that they try to claim that it's a true story. Cowhand Glenn Ford traveled to Brazil to deliver Brahma bulls in William Castle's "The Americano" (1955), while drunken outlaw Lee Van Cleef pursued kung fu master Lieh Lo to China in a search for hidden treasure in Anthony M. Dawson's "The Stranger and the Gunfighter" (1976). So he travels to the Middle East to enter and has several rivals and there are those who don't want him to win. I'll look for the soundtrack on CD. It's really a classical adventure movie, with princesses and scimitars and sandstorms and swarms of locusts. Was this review helpful? The confrontation will be terrible and he'll face off imposing winds , locust plague , quicksands... though he'll love an Arab princess (Zuleikha Robinson) , Sheik's daughter (Omar Shariff) too . 41 of 47 people found this review helpful. Yet the film insisted on trying to be more serious and injected a internal conflict into the main character that just doesn't belong in such a silly film.

Though you know a Mustang has to be a rather fast and strong horse because they named a rather good car after it. Joe Johnston’s epic Western Hidalgo (2004) is a beautifully shot film with captivating desert vistas and striking close-up reaction shots that just hold on Viggo Mortensen reacting to horrible things happening. We shoud all learn from such a movie that to preserve and protect the wild horse, and all wild animals returns such rewards and meaning to us human beings. Was this review helpful? There are children that don't know about these things. Maybe just a little long, but the movie flows well - the lead character is likable and you care what happens to him and Hidalgo. 9 out of 10 found this helpful. We were interested in the story and did a little research - the basic facts appear true (he did indeed take part in this race) although there is a liberal amount of poetic license, of course. In the film's prologue, he works for the cavalry and witnesses the massacre of his people at Wounded Knee. In Walt Disney Pictures' latest adventure movie, Hidalgo, a special relationship develops between a rider and his horse. Was this review helpful? Africans were enslaved and women wore (wear) veils. A great action/adventure movie! Aziz betrays the Sheikh by stealing his family's journal of horse breeding and gives it to Katib.
